if scott and stiles’s relationship is going to be tested in s3 can i get some stiles/jackson sassy friendship going on like at the end of s1/early s2 or
HEY, REMEMBER THAT TIME STERICA WAS GOING TO BE A THING? AND THEY STARTED GIVING THEM MOMENTS SO PEOPLE COULD SHIP THEM?
ERICA SHOVING STILES UP AGAINST A WALL…
…WHICH DEREK ALREADY DID.
STILES MAKING AN AWESOME POINT ABOUT WHY HE HAS A BRAIN AND ERICA DOESN’T.
STILES MAKING AN AWESOME POINT ABOUT WHY HE HAS A BRAIN AND DEREK DOESN’T.
STILES BEING ALL SNARKY AND PLEASED WITH HIMSELF.
(PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT DEREK IS MUCH CLOSER TO STILES THAN ERICA IS, FOR MUCH LONGER, AND IN THE STEREK VERSION THE CAMERA IS ALWAYS AT THE SIDE, SHOWING BOTH OF THEIR PROFILES CONSTANTLY, EMPHASISING THE RELATIONSHIP. THE ONLY TIME YOU GET A PROFILE SHOT IN THE STERICA PUSHING AGAINST THE WALL SCENE IS WHEN SHE TURNS TO LOOK AT THE CAMERA BEHIND HER, WHICH DOES NOT EMPHASISE THE RELATIONSHIP AT ALL BECAUSE IT’S TO SHOW HER LOOKING AWAY. AHEM.)
AND, OOO, LOOK AT ALL THESE OTHER PARALLELS:
WATCHING DEREK WALK AWAY.
WATCHING ERICA WALK AWAY.
HOLDING ERICA WHEN SHE NEEDS HELP, BOTH MAKING A DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO MEET EACH OTHER’S GAZES.
HOLDING DEREK WHEN HE NEEDS HELP, BOTH MAKING A DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO MEET EACH OTHER’S GAZES (AND SRSLY, SO MUCH HARDER TO DO HERE, BUT THEY’RE TRYING).
DEREK LURKING BEHIND STILES SILENTLY, SURPRISING HIM.
ERICA DOING THE SAME THING.
HMM, JEFF DAVIS. THESE ARE SOME V V INTERESTING CHOICES.
Can everyone just tweet Jeff Davis asking (begging, really) him to put a Slow Kids At Play song somewhere in season 3 (preferably when Stiles is driving his jeep and jamming to music but you know I’m not picky) because I think if enough people ask he would consider it
Can you just imagine Dylan’s face when the whole cast is sitting down watching the episode together and you just see Stiles jamming in the jeep to SKAP? Oh gosh he would be like:
today i was asked what my favorite thing about sterek is. now, i have a lot of sterek meta— a lot. and there’s about a thousand different reasons that i could have listed for loving sterek. but this is a question about my favorite sterek thing. the one thing to rule them all, if you would. so, without further ado:
fandom likes to play around with derek’s wolf side. we like to make him lose control, wolf out, and possess distinctly wolflike characteristics such as mating and knotting. it’s kind of a thing.
but teen wolf isn’t actually about the werewolves. scott mccall’s story isn’t about werewolves. it’s about humanity.
what does it means to be human? teen wolf has shown us over and over again that werewolves don’t have to be wild, vicious things; we’ve also been shown that you are not good just by virtue of being human. there’s shades of gray in everything, and fate has absolutely nothing to do with it. no matter how the characters in teen wolf were born, what determines their humanity is very simple: choice.
in black and white terms, derek is the most wolflike character we have on the show. for one, derek is the alpha. that puts him in a position over the other wolves, and, like laura and peter before him, we know that derek can fully change into a wolf if he wants to. derek is also the primary confirmed born werewolf on the show, so he’s the character that we know doesn’t know what it’s like to be “human.”
so derek is the most wolflike character on the show, right?
in fact, derek being born werewolf actually— canonically— gives him more control over his inner wolf. derek is always in control. the wolf does not come out to play unless derek makes the choice to bring it out. he is the wolf who is most anchored to his humanity, who doesn’t claw-out or grow out his sideburns at the first sight of the full moon. he’s got that shit on lockdown. on top of that, he has yet to choose to go full wolf as the alpha. we’ve seen his semi-wolf form: wrinkled up face, red eyes, huge fangs, lack of eyebrows, sideburns— so on and so forth. but we know that the alpha has a full wolf form, and derek hasn’t whipped that bad boy out yet. not even against the kanima. he hasn’t made the choice to let that side of him out, so he’s stayed human.
in this way, derek is the most human of all of the werewolves. he constantly makes the decision to supress the wolf, to hold back. the only time that he has ever lost any of that control was when he was in excruciating, non-stop pain that was ultimately leading to his death (1x04, magic bullet). and even then, all we saw was increased aggression, claws, bursts of sensitive senses, and a flash of the eyes— and only in fleeting moments. in twenty-four episodes, that was once. one time. just flashes of slipping control— never letting go completely.
so derek is simultaneously the most wolf-y wolf and the most human wolf. wild in his blood, but tame by choice.
which is fitting because stiles is simultaneously the most human human and the most wild character on the show.
we all know about stiles’s humanity: it’s an insecurity of his that gets touched on every so often in rare but intimate moments that give us a little window to stiles’s supressed sadnesses. he’s had to watch his best friend become strong, beloved, and heroic by virtue of his lycanthropy, while stiles has stayed the same. he’s helped scott every step of the way, but what does stiles have to show for it? he doesn’t have the girl, he’s not co-captain of the lacrosse team, and he’s put his father’s life— and his relationship with his father in general— in jeopardy several times. stiles’s humanity literally gives him the ability to do what the wolves cannot in 2x08 (raving) when he lays the mountain ash, and it’s a brief but beautiful moment of accomplishment that delights him.
everything about stiles is ordinary. maybe that’s what hurts him the most: the feeling that he’ll never be extraordinary. he’ll always be the ordinary funny guy sidekick— destined to fall in the shadow of his best friend.
but stiles has no obligation to be that person. he doesn’t have to be tied up in all this werewolf business. stiles could close his books and walk away and no one would be able to tell him no because stiles is a human, and this stuff is probably too dangerous for him in the long run, anyway.
and yet here’s stiles— the fandom has named him the boy who runs with wolves, and that’s so apt it hurts. stiles might technically be human, but he’s got a wild heart. he jumps into things too quickly, trusts his instincts without faltering (think of how he just knew that matt was a bad guy!), is willing to hurt and be hurt in order to defend what’s his, and you can’t really tell if he fears almost nothing or if there’s almost nothing he doesn’t fear. he goes through life with a vague understanding (a theoretical understanding, maybe) that his actions could have consequences, but it’s rare that that slows him down.
he thinks quickly and acts quickly because he knows that a quick decision could mean the difference between life or death— no time to worry when survival is your MO.
and it is, by the way. his objective is survival.
at the heart of his monologue with ms. morrell in 2x11 (battlefield) is this question: what lengths would stiles go to in order to survive?
funny that it’s the most human character on the show, isn’t it? usually when we think about “surviving” we think about “surviving in the wild” or “survival of the fittest.” it’s practically animal terminology, and yet we’ve been set up to see stiles’s future story as being one of survival.
because he’s a wild boy, despite his human heart. the wildest boy of them all.
and i think that, at the end of the day, that’s my favorite sterek thing. the fact that these two characters are so staunchly “wolf” and “human” on the outside of things, but the second you start to scratch away that outer layer, you begin to see something entirely different underneath. in stiles, derek’s humanity can be anchored; in derek, stiles’s wild hunger can be satisfied.
Ok guys, it’s crude and messy, but it’s done.
I am not very well versed in the ways of flash so this is a major experiment!!! I wish I could get that fancy drag and snap but that’s just too advanced for me. Let me know if anything doesn’t work and I’ll try to fix it! I hope you like it!!
THIS IS PRETTY GREAT
